Bill Brown remembered

This past week we were very saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Brown. Bill was a longtime club member, one of our most active members, and a good friend to all.  Over many years, he served in various positions on the club board, but most memorably as Warmwater Chair and Membership Chair. During his tenure as Membership Chair, he continually recruited new members such that we maintained our status as one of the largest fly clubs in the southern United States! Equally as impressive was his dedication to our annual "Red Stick Day" event. His hard work and attention to details as a member of the event committee was a huge contributor to it's success.

Probably Bill's greatest contribution to our club - and even to the world of fly fishing - was his long-running series of "Eternal Novice" articles he wrote for "The Red Letter" newsletter. These were educational pieces often written in a storytelling format. It reflected his personal philosophy - one that many of us adopted - that in fly fishing, one never stops learning!

Bill was 71. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East at 11000 Florida Boulevard on Monday, October 24th from 10:00am until a Memorial Service at 11:00am. An obituary with more details about Bill's wonderful life can be found here on the The Advocate newspaper online.

BR National Hunting and Fishing Day cancelled

Due to the impacts of the August 2016 Flood, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries has announced that the Baton Rouge venue for National Hunting and Fishing Day will be cancelled this year.  The Waddill facility was damaged by flood water, but more important, many of the volunteers and groups which make this event so successful were also impacted by the flood.  NHF Day will continue as planned at the other venues in Haughton, Woodworth and West Monroe on the 4th Saturday of September.

Our 24th annual Red Stick Day is coming up Saturday, March 12th.  Red Stick Day is our club conclave - a celebration of fly fishing featuring programs, fly tying, fly casting, kayak demos, good food, loads of raffle items, and even fishing on-site.

This year our special guest is Bill Laminack of Panama City, Florida. For more info, go to the Red Stick Day page.  Also, click here for the RSD Flyer

Red Stick Day Banquet:The banquet falls on the day before Red Stick Day, Friday, March 11th.  Cost is $15.  There will also be a raffle at the banquet in addition to Red Stick Day.  We are asking for some donations to be specifically for the Ladies.  Ask your wives and girl friends if they have anything the would like to donate.  We want it to be fun for everyone.  Bill Laminack will be speaking at the banquet as well.

We are going to be needing donations of time and raffle items to pull of Red Stick Day and the Banquet.  The raffles help pay for our event and contribute to our educational and conservation activities.  Also, setup up and tear down crews will be need for both events.  Also, cooks are needed for the banquet.
