Rainbeaux trout have arrived!

On Tuesday, BREC stocked five ponds around the parish with rainbow trout. Already several anglers have posted their catches on Facebook. Most of the trout are being caught on worms or corn. This is the case each year. As the trout become acclimated, their diet diverts to aquatic insects - and it's advantage flyfishers!

The daily limit is four (4) trout per person. However, catch-and-release is strongly encouraged to allow the maximum number of anglers to enjoy this fishery.

The ponds that were stocked are:
- Central Sports Park, 10501 Lovett Rd, Central
- Forest Community Park, 13900 S. Harrells Ferry Rd
- Howell Community Park, 5509 Winbourne Ave
- Perkins Community Park, 7122 Perkins Rd
- Zachary Road Community Park, 20055 Old Scenic Hwy, Zachary

New this year... at each pond there were four (4) tagged fish. Anglers who catch a tagged fish are eligible for a prize. Details of the program can be found at the BREC Rainbow Trout webpage.  Click here.

Red Stick members are encouraged to post their rainbeaux trout stories (with photo) on our Facebook Group page. Members can also check on what flies and tactics are working best. Click here.

Leeville Fly Fishing Weekend has been cancelled

Earlier today, RSFF Saltwater Chair Randy Leonpacher informed all attendees of this weekend's Leeville Fly Fishing Weekend that the event was cancelled due to a tropical disturbance that is expected to become Hurricane Barry by the weekend.

Just an hour ago, Randy made contact with the folks at Boudreaux's Motel in Leeville, the location for the Friday and Saturday evening activities. And where many of the attendees would be staying. They said that the road in Leeville is under water and they are unable to get to the motel!

As of now, there are no plans to reschedule this event. However, the club's 2019 Fall Catch & Eat is scheduled for the last Saturday in October. All those who signed up for the LFFW are encouraged to take part in this event.

Beginning this month, we'll be having our general meetings at a new location - the Adult Education Building at Broadmoor United Methodist. The new facility room has all the audio-visual requirements the club needs.  The decision to move from the LDWF building was based on financial reasons, but still a very difficult one.

Our fly tying sessions will remain each month at the Independence Library.

For this meeting, our main topic of discussion will be this weekend's annual "Leeville Fly Fishing Weekend", formerly the Grand Isle Fly Fishing Weekend. Saltwater Chair Randy Leonpacher will discuss preparations for fishing speckled trout and redfish along the Highway 1 corridor. We'll also get the latest fishing reports from the area, and best spots for boats, kayaks, and bank fishing. Even if you can't make this weekend, there'll be lots of good info for future trips.

Make plans now for Red Stick Day on March 2nd

Our 26th annual Red Stick Day is coming up Saturday, March 2nd.  Red Stick Day is our fly fishing festival - a celebration of our sport featuring great programs, fly tying demonstrations, casting instruction, good food, loads of raffle items, and more.  And best of all, admission is free!

We're thrilled to announce that this year's event returns to the LDWF Waddill Outdoors Education Center off North Flannery Road.  The ponds on the premises are full of big bass and bluegill, so bring your fly tackle.  The ponds will also be the site for casting instruction during the day.

Once again, we have great programs lined up. Ian Huang, Orvis Baton Rouge Fishing Manager, will talk on destination fishing. Vic Tedesco, one of the top speckled trout experts on the Gulf Coast, will talk on fly fishing the Grand Isle area. Jim Davis, renown Tennessee and Virginia tailwaters guide, will talk on trout fishing that area for big browns and rainbows. And finally, Jay Clark, one of the nation's top flycasters and former member of Team USA, will give a presentation on casting.

Over a dozen of the region's top fly tiers will also be on hand to demonstrate their various flies, along with their favorite legacy patterns. Attendees can watch and learn the step-by-step process to making a great fish-catching lure from scratch.

Details about the event, including speaker and tier bios, schedule of activities, and more can be found by clicking on the 2019 Red Stick Day link above.
