January 15th General Meeting: Redfish Regs & Pickerel on the Fly with Catch Cormier

 This month’s featured speaker is Glen "Catch" Cormier.  Catch is the Conservation Director for the Gulf Coast Council of Fly Fishers International (FFI).  In addition, he loves fly fishing for chain pickerel across west Louisiana, east Texas and elsewhere.  Catch will be presenting on a pair of topics:

1. Fly Fishing for Chain Pickerel in the Pineywoods Region of Louisiana and Texas

2. An update on LDWF efforts to amend current Redfish Regulations

Be sure to mark your calendar for what should be an informative and entertaining evening.

Merry Christmas!

Here's wishing our members and friends, and all of their families, a most blessed Christmas!  Hopefully Santa will put something under the tree that helps us catch more fish - or at least make the trip more enjoyable!

At the same time, let's remember the reason for the season.  Please be generous to those in need, and pray for those in suffering or distress, and for those away from their families this season - especially our service men and women.

Look for details of the 2024 Jambalaya Challenge in the next week as it kicks off on January 1st.

Flies & Flights - Weds, December 20th

Join us Wednesday, December 20th for this month's Flies & Flights hosted by Rally Cap Brewing.  As this meeting will be more of a holiday celebration than anything else, it will be an open tying night and everyone is encouraged to bring along materials to tie some of their favorite flies.  We'll of course have extra vises, tools, and materials for those looking to learn as well.  So please don't hesitate to join if you're looking to learn.

Join us this evening (Monday, November 27th) at 7pm for this month's RSFF Fly Tying meeting.  This month Brian Robert's will be leading us as we learn to tie Matt Bennett's Lunch Money streamer. 

New speck regulations effective November 20th

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has officially published the change in spotted seatrout (speckled trout) regulations. They will go into effect Monday, November 20th. According to biologists, these new regulations will allow the Spawning Potential Ratio of specks to return to 18 percent within 3 years.  Currently, the SPR is 8 percent which is below the Conservation Standard of 14 percent.

The new regulations are as follows:

• Size limit: 13-20 inches total length, only two fish included within the daily creel limit can be greater than 20 inches total length
• Daily Creel: 15-fish daily limit per angler
• Charter guides and crew will not be able to retain a creel limit while on a charter trip but may engage in fishing

The current limits are 12" minimum size (no slot) and a daily creel of 25 fish east of Mermentau River and 15 fish west of Mermentau. The new regulations will be statewide.
