June activities and updates

Jambalaya Challenge & Big Stick Updates

Five months down, and the Jambalaya Challenge shows no sign of slowing down!  As of this posting on June 2nd, we have nine anglers in double digits with Brian Roberts leading the way at 29.  In total, RSFF members have submitted 250+ entries representing more than 70+ species!

The big news in the Big Stick is Sydney Dobson’s 10.25” submission in the Bream category.  This fish was actually caught on the club’s Concordia trip in April, but I overlooked it during the last update.  Awesome catch, Sydney!

If you’re interested in taking part in either event, check out the details by clicking on the Jambalaya Challenge and Big Stick items on the menu above.

RSFF General Meeting
Monday, June 8th

7:00pm - 9:00pm
Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library
9200 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA
Topic: Rod Building 101 with Brian Roberts

Join us on Monday, June 8th, for the June RSFF General Meeting, featuring a presentation by RSFF President Brian Roberts on the fundamentals of fly rod building.

Whether you've considered building your own custom fly rod or simply want to better understand how modern fly rods are designed and assembled, this presentation will provide an excellent introduction to the craft. Brian will cover the basic components of a fly rod, the tools and materials required, the rod-building process from start to finish, and tips for getting started on your first build.

Rod building is a rewarding way to deepen your connection to the sport while creating equipment tailored specifically to your fishing style. This presentation is designed for anglers of all experience levels and will include opportunities for questions and discussion.

If you've ever wanted to learn what goes into building a fly rod, don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of RSFF's most experienced rod builders.

For those wishing to attend remotely, a separate email will be sent the morning of meeting with log-in instructions.

Flies & Flights
Wednesday, June 17th

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Rally Cap Brewing
11212 Pennywood Ave, Baton Rouge, LA
Featured Pattern: Clark County Coroner

Join us for this month’s Flies & Flights at Rally Cap Brewing, on Wednesday, June 17th, from 7-9pm.  This month Brian Roberts will demonstrating the Clark County Coroner.  While the beer is always flowing at Rally Cap, I’ve been told this demonstration will be BYOB (Bring your Own Bucktail) for those interested in tying along.  With gar season right around the corner, it’s a great time to add a new articulated pattern to your arsenal.

Whether you’re a seasoned tier or new to the vise, come hang out, sip some craft brews, and tie a fly with the community.

F&F is an independent collective of tiers just looking to tie and enjoy a social gathering with some fine brews. While not affiliated with Red Stick, it was hatched by a few club members as an alternative to a traditional meeting environment. Everyone is welcome!

RSFF Fly Tying Meeting
Monday, June 22nd

7:00pm - until
Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library
9200 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA
Featured Tyer: Sydney Dobson
Featured Fly:  The Calcasieu Pig Boat

Join us on Monday, June 22nd, as RSFF member Sydney Dobson teaches us how to tie the Calcasieu Pig Boat, a legendary Louisiana bass fly created by Tom Nixon.

Named for the Calcasieu River, the Pig Boat was designed to imitate the rubber-skirted jigs that became popular with bass anglers in the 1950s. Its bulky profile and lively action have made it a proven producer of largemouth bass for generations.  Whether you're a bass angler or simply enjoy tying classic patterns, this is a fly worth learning.

As usual, beginners and guests are welcome!  Materials are provided.  Bring your vise and tools. For those without tools or vise, the club has some for use during this session.
