May activities and updates

Jambalaya Challenge & Big Stick Updates

Carlos’ Ozark Bass from the club’s
recent trip to Crooked Creek!
Spring trips are in full swing, and the Jambalaya Challenge is heating up!  As of this morning (May 7th), we have a three-way tie for first with Chris, Ben & Brian having each submitted 27 species!   Brad Dunne is right on their tails though at 25 and Carlos Adams is within striking distance at 18.  Overall, we’ve now received over 230 entries representing more than 50 species!

In the Big Stick, Ben Roussel remains unchallenged with the lead in three categories.  It’s still anyone’s game though, so get on the water and don’t forget that measuring board!

If you’re interested in taking part in either event, click on "Jambalaya Challenge" and "Big Stick" in the menu above.

RSFF General Meeting
Monday, May 11th

7:00pm - 9:00pm
Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library
9200 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA
Topic: The Marsh Chicks latest production

Join us Monday, May 11th for a special presentation as RSFF Members, Emily & Laken - aka, the Marsh Chicks - share their latest video collaboration.

Talented anglers and videographers, the pair recently joined Capt. David Rogers for a day on the marsh.  The showing will be a great opportunity to experience marsh fishing first hand (and great promotion for David’s new venture, Flats Drifter) and will also be an excellent opportunity to pick Emily & Laken’s brains on all things fishing photography and videography!

Be sure to check out all of The Marsh Chicks’ content on Youtube:

For those wishing to attend remotely, a separate email will be sent the morning of meeting with log-in instructions.

Flies & Flights
Wednesday, May 20th

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Rally Cap Brewing
11212 Pennywood Ave, Baton Rouge, LA
Featured Pattern: TBD

While we haven’t settled on a featured pattern as of yet, we’re aiming for something that can be used by anglers fishing the coast as action there is heating up.

Whether you’re a seasoned tier or new to the vise, come hang out, sip some craft brews, and tie a fly with the community.

F&F is an independent collective of tiers just looking to tie and enjoy a social gathering with some fine brews. While not affiliated with Red Stick, it was hatched by a few club members as an alternative to a traditional meeting environment. Everyone is welcome!

RSFF Fly Tying Meeting
Monday, May 25th

7:00pm - until
Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library
9200 Bluebonnet Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA
Featured Fly Tyer: Carlos Adams
Featured Fly: The Sand Flea Spoon Fly

Join us this month as as our very own Carlos Adams, teaches us how to tie the Sand Flea Spoon Fly.

Hardshell Sand Fleas (Mole Crabs) are a premier, naturally occurring bait for surf fishing, particularly for pompano, as they inhabit the water’s edge in colonies and are often collected using a rake.  These small crustaceans are found in the swash zone, and females often carry bright orange eggs, which are highly attractive to fish.

A simple mimic for these bite size morsels, the Sand Flea Spoon Fly incorporates a variety of tying materials including a fake fingernail to create a unique fish catching design.

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to stock up your surf box before that summer beach trip!!

As usual, beginners and guests are welcome!  Tools, vises and materials are available for use during this session for those looking to learn.
